Career Tours

Career Tours Program

Career Tours is a program designed to enhance in-class language studies by introducing students to language in a real, professional social context. Students in Career Tours will visit companies in their chosen field(s), talk to professionals in their chosen career(s), get exposure to real North American working life, and come away with an enriched understanding of business English.

Career Tours can be done by individual students or groups, and are often integrated into a program of studies, or offered as an added feature of a group program. Tours are one-off visits to companies and last for an average of 90 minutes.

Program Requirements

  • English or French at a lower intermediate level or above
  • Aged 19 and above for individual tours (13 and above for group tours, with school-supplied student supervisor if minors present)
  • No study and/or work permit is required
  • Maximum group size of 15 for customized tours, please see below for maximums for packaged tours

Individual, Class, and Group Tours

There are several different ways for tours to be arranged:

Individual Tour

This is the easiest type of tour to arrange. Students are registered with EE 4 weeks in advance of their desired tour date. Students complete form careertours_2014.pdf and submit it to EE along with their resume (if available). EE then arranges a meeting with the student to discuss their program selections. After this the tour is arranged. For recurring tours, an initial meeting may be required between the student and company.

Class Tour

This type of tour is integrated into your curriculum. Most commonly done in business classes, a school representative informs EE at the start of a class that a tour or tours is requested. A single careertours_2014.pdf form is completed by the school and submitted to EE at least 3 weeks in advance of the requested tour date. On the form, you will be asked to list class level, number of students, tour preference, and requested date and time. 1 week before the tour, EE will send you or your teacher specifics on the tour.

Group Tour

These are tours done for special groups - most often with bulk registrations from companies or universities abroad.  Group Tours are typically arranged as part of the agent’s registration process with your school. When a group is registered with you, please let EE know at least 4 weeks in advance and complete careertours_2014.pdf. Please give us any special details about the group and any special requests as early as possible. You DO NOT need to confirm with EE if the tour is available before making arrangements with the agent.

NB: All tours are exclusive to your school - your students will not be mixed with groups of students from other schools.

Tour Options

Most tours are custom-made, specific to your school's needs. However, Experience Education also has packages of ready-made Career Tours. There are 6 types of ready-made tour, available for groups, classes, and individuals. Each package tour lasts 4-6 hours, and is different from a 'custom/business tour' in the duration as well as tour add-ons such as meals, shows and games (depending on the tour). Business/Custom tours last an average of 90 minutes - 2 hours and include only the basic company visit and Q&A component.

  • Arts and Culture Tour :  Each of Canada’s major cities has a rich and changing cultural scene. Depending on the time of year, your students will visit art galleries, a theatre, or even a film studio. There they will tour the operations part that tourists never see, they will meet people involved in the production or curation of arts and culture, and listen to them explain how their careers work, and how someone enters their industry in Canada. After the visit behind the scenes, students may take part in a guided tour, or stay for a show (depending on the specific venue). Arts and Culture Tours are also available as recurring tours along the Business tour Model (see below). Individual or Groups. Max Group Size: 15.

  • Business Tour : These are recurring tours, done individually. Students are taken to a company in a business administration field such as finance, marketing, accounting, international trade, and there they spend a half day, 3 days per week, observing business operations. This is done during their period of studies, in the afternoons, after class. Students complete observation assignments designed by EE to direct their tour of the premises. Observations last 4 weeks, for a total of 12 visits. At the end of the visits, your student will complete an observation report on targeted business language, and Canadian business culture. During the visits the student may be asked to assist with some clerical chores. Description above refers to Individual Recurring Tours. Specialized non-recurring business tours are available for groups of up to 15 - though with no hands-on component.

  • Culinary Tour : Experience Canadian real Canadian cuisine very every angle. Tour a restaurant, go behind the scenes with a chef. Learn about their cooking styles, how they select their ingredients, and what’s involved in becoming a chef in Canada. After take part in a cooking demonstration, and then sit down for a prix fixe meal of the finest local food. Individual or Groups. Max Group Size: 8.

  • Engineering Tour : Engineering is a broad field and includes things such as cutting edge green technology, traditional auto and airplane manufacturing, as well as companies working to design machines for everyday use. During an Engineering Tour, students will visit companies in the manufacturing sector, tour factories, see how machines are made, and then take part in a talk by a senior engineer who will talk about who their products are manufactured, and how their career works in Canada. Engineering Tours are also available as recurring tours, along the Business Tour model (see above). Individual or Groups. Max Group Size: 8.

  • Nature and Environment Tour : Canada is know for it’s nature and wildlife. In the Nature and Environment Tour, students will meet the people who protect and help that nature to survive. Students will visit a wildlife sanctuary, or a nature preservation and restoration site. There they will tour operations, and listen to a scientist in the field discuss the challenges facing Canada’s environment, what they do in their jobs, and how students can enter their career and how that career impacts the world. Individual or Groups. Max Group Size: 15.

  • Sports Tour : Canada is home to professional sports teams in baseball, basketball, hockey, football, and soccer - as well as numerous minor league franchises. Sports Tours will expose students to teams and sports venues generally at the minor league level, but also with some major leagues depending on the season. Students will tour a sports venue, there they will meet a member of the team’s business staff and learn about careers in sports management. Individual or Groups. Max Group Size: 15.
