About the Company
The Venture Development Centre operates out of the University of Massachusetts, and is home to 24 different IT, technology, and biotech companies. VDC is an "incubator", an organization that arranges funding, mentorship, and facilities for promising companies to start-up.
Among the resources at VDC are labs specialized in genomics, and supercomputers. Besides the companies in residence at VDC, there are 5 resident mentors - experts in business development for tech and and life sciences firms.
Resident tech firms include:
HSTRY makes a digital learning tool that enables teachers and students to create and explore interactive timelines. The company won MassTLC’s 2015 Innovative Technology of the Year – Education.
Morphlab uses robotics to enable reconfiguration of interior spaces, increasing the efficiency, affordability, and functionality of urban studio units and micro apartments. The company was born at the MIT Media Lab.
LabCloud Inc. provides an integrated cloud-based data management and procurement solution for R&D organizations. It is being piloted at LabCentral in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Symmetric Computing delivers massive computational power economically. Its servers are distributed by Penguin Computing.
The tour will take place at 3:00pm on Thursday the 22nd of October. The tour will be conducted by Christian Vialva, Program and Marketing Coordinator for the VDC.
He will take the students for a tour of the facilities, discuss some of the resident firms and their technologies and then do a question and answer session. The tour will conclude at about 3:45pm.
VDC is located on the 3rd Floor of Wheatley Hall at Mass. The address is: Wheatley Hall, Third Floor, 100 Morrissey Blvd. Boston, MA. This location is accessible on public transport, with the trip taking about 30-45 minutes from LSI Boston. VDC offers the following travel suggestions:
We recommend taking the Red Line to JFK/UMass Station. From 6:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., a free shuttle bus takes you to and from the Campus Center. The trip normally takes 10 minutes.
The host company is expecting a small group of up to 5 students, as well as an instructor/guide from LSI. ID is not required, but nonetheless is a good idea.
